Introducing Mould Shell Studio: Our New Mould Design Venture
We’re pleased to introduce Mould Shell Studio, a new venture from Glen Belfield, owner of Bioteknik, focused on custom mould shell design, 3D printing and mould-making software.
Bioteknik continues to provide business IT recycling, secure data destruction and equipment reuse services. This new project is separate, bringing Glen’s interest in practical design and 3D printing to makers, model builders and small businesses.
From a 3D model to a usable mould
Making a silicone mould involves more than choosing the right silicone. The surrounding box or support shell also needs to suit the model, hold together securely and allow the mould to be opened when the job is finished.
Mould Shell Studio helps customers turn an existing 3D model into a purpose-designed mould box or supporting shell. Depending on the project, this can include split sections, alignment features, screw connections and openings for pouring silicone.
The aim is to make mould preparation more manageable, with designs suited to the shape of the model and the intended casting process.
Design files or a printed shell
Customers can enquire about design files for printing themselves, or a design-and-print service for receiving a physical mould shell.
The printed shell is the tooling used during mould-making—not the finished cast product. Customers can then use it as part of their own silicone mould-making and casting process.
Each project is assessed individually, with design requirements, printing and delivery agreed before work begins.
Software for hands-on makers
Alongside the design service, Glen is developing mould-design software to help users prepare and adjust their own shells from 3D models.
The program is currently being developed and tested, with an emphasis on visual controls and practical guidance. The Mould Shell Studio website will share further details as it progresses.
