A monitor may not hold files in the way a laptop or server does, but it is still a controlled business asset. When an office refresh leaves dozens of screens in a store room, knowing how to recycle office monitors properly protects your organisation from WEEE non-compliance, avoids unsafe handling and creates a clear audit trail for equipment leaving site.
For most organisations, the right route is not a trip to the household recycling centre or an informal giveaway. It is a documented collection through a specialist IT asset disposal provider that can assess equipment for reuse, manage secure transport and send non-reusable units to approved recycling channels.
Why office monitors need a managed disposal route
Flat-panel monitors contain materials that should not enter general waste. Depending on their age and type, they may include circuit boards, cabling, plastics, glass, metals, mercury-containing backlights or other components requiring specialist treatment. Under the UK WEEE Regulations, business electrical equipment must be handled through an appropriate waste route rather than placed in a skip or bin.

Create a simple inventory of the monitors being retired. Record the manufacturer, model, screen size, quantity and visible condition. If you have asset tags or serial numbers, capture these too. If the office is moving or closing, combine monitor recycling with the disposal of computers, peripherals, printers, network equipment and mobile devices. Questions to ask a monitor recycling provider

For mixed IT collections, ask how they separate data-bearing equipment from non-data-bearing assets. A monitor recycling provider does not need to treat every screen as a hard drive, but they should recognise devices with embedded storage and have a process for handling them securely.
Finally, be cautious of vague promises of “free recycling” with no discussion of quantities, equipment condition or paperwork.
