For IT, facilities and compliance teams, the challenge is rarely finding someone willing to take old equipment away. The real question is whether the provider can collect it securely, account for every device, remove data to an appropriate standard and provide the documentation needed to close the process properly.

What laptop buyback means for a business

Laptop buyback is the recovery of value from business-owned devices that still have a resale market. Apple devices and well-specified business laptops may command stronger values, although market demand can change quickly.

Organisations should also be realistic about preparation. Do not spend internal time trying to repair every old laptop simply to improve a buyback figure. For offices, schools, universities and public sector locations, collection outside peak hours may reduce disruption. Unmarked vehicles can be appropriate where the nature of the collection should remain discreet. If there are laptops across several locations, consolidating the equipment at one site may improve efficiency, although this needs to be balanced against the risk and effort of moving data-bearing devices internally.
